THROUGH THE LENSES – Quest 2 vs Quest 1

Here we are with the most awaited Comparison! Welcome to another Through the Lenses Video! This time it took really ages to make it right, because I really wanted to show the generational jump between the Oculus Quest and the Oculus Quest 2! Well, let’s see it together in this video comparison now! And then let’s go in depth about it! Quest vs Quest 2!

Nvidia’s RTX 3080 looks like it might be getting a 20GB upgrade

Nvidia kicked off its RTX 30 series launch by announcing the RTX 3070, 3080, and 3090, but we always knew that the line-up would eventually expand beyond this in due time. However, little did we know that we might see an improved version of the flagship RTX 3080 at some point in the future.

Gigabyte was the first to reveal the potential GeForce RTX 3080 20GB, with double the memory of the newly released 10GB model. This has since been corroborated by Galax, as VideoCardz reports that the upgrade made an appearance on a roadmap during one of the manufacturer’s meetings in China. Since Gigabyte listed the 20GB version with an S in its product number, it’s possible that this could be the RTX 3080 Super or Ti instead of an iterative introduction, but only time will tell.

Multi-GPU technology is not quite dead but Nvidia is close to pulling the trigger

It feels like a million years since SLI was relevant, and even during its heyday, the prospect of running multiple graphics cards to boost performance in games had some serious downsides. Like cost, stuttering, and the fact that performance was not consistent across all games. None of it matters now, because SLI has been put on life support. Starting January 1, 2020, Nvidia will stop adding new SLI profiles to its GeForce driver packages.

Technically, SLI is not dead, but if this was an episode of The Walking Dead, it would be the one where it gets bit by a silicon-eating GPU. SLI is going to live on for a bit, supposing game developers decide to put the work in supporting the technology themselves without the benefit of specific SLI profiles at the driver level. But its days are numbered.

New Xeon-capable motherboard offers 20 USB 3.2 ports

Industrial PC company Portwell is offering an unusual server motherboard. The PEB-9783G2AR is a FlexATX board designed for use in low-profile chassis, supporting Intel Comet Lake-S CPUs and up to 128GiB of DDR4 ECC RAM. This, and the rest of the board’s specs, are pretty normal—but then there’s the 20 USB 3.2 type-A ports.

Remelting 3D printed thermoplastics (the salt method)

This is a method I developed a few years back for my day job. We needed watertight containers made from PETG as we were handling chemicals that would easily diffuse through – and break down all other commercially available thermoplastics. After some trials with sand I started using finely ground salt.

It perfectly immobilizes the parts, and gets only superficially embedded. Once the parts are baked, the salt will have superficially embedded itself into the part surface. Washing the part in warm water will dissolve all the salt, leaving behind a sparkly texture.
