Plex Movie Poster Display

Plex Movie Poster Display is a side project I started a few years ago. I always thought it would be cool to have a display outside my media room that would show the poster of the movie or TV show that was currently playing. I searched the internet and found similar projects, which were all windows programs.  There was just one problem… I wanted to run this project on a Raspberry Pi 3 running Linux. So, unsatisfied with the solutions I found online, I decided to build my own.

This script scrapes http://IP_ADDRESS_OF_PLEX_SERVER>:32400/status/sessions and displays the poster, current progress, and description of the currently playing movie or TV show on a screen. If the client is not playing any media the script shows random movie posters from the Plex Server.

RaspberryPi fruitbox – MP3 Jukebox

Raspberry Pi fruitbox

fruitbox is a customisable MP3 player for the Raspberry Pi, allowing the user to create the look and feel of classic jukeboxes.

Then put all your MP3 files onto a USB memory stick, plug into the Pi (any model except Pi4) and then power up! If you want to use touchscreens, remap your buttons or create your own skins, then you’ll need to read the userguide.txt to find out how. The default keys are also detailed in the userguide.

Inside HDHomeRun’s big bet on ATSC 3.0

Late last month, SiliconDust took a leap of faith and started taking orders for a new HDHomeRun TV tuner on Kickstarter.

If all goes to plan, the HDHomeRun Quatro 4K will be the first external ATSC 3.0 tuner for consumers when it launches in September. Like other HDHomeRun tuners, the Quatro 4K will capture over-the-air broadcasts from any antenna and stream the video to phones, computers, and connected TV devices around the house. But in markets where ATSC 3.0 is available, the tuner will support broadcasts in up to 4K resolution with up to 7.1.4 surround sound, while also improving reception and allowing for new features such as on-demand video.

Plex Bringing Back Channels And Adding Whole New Dynamic

Plex could be becoming more like a Roku. The growing Plex Movies and TV Shows section now includes Crackle’s library. For years Plex had a listing of what it called channels, later renamed plugins. The entries were a way to access web-based content on-demand and ranged from Networks to apps and were not officially supported. As the platform got more mainstream, channels found their way off of Plex and were sort of replaced by the podcasts and web shows. But a major effort from Plex to develop ad-supported streaming on top of the other content has opened the door to channels once more.

In the past Plex had its own channel store of sorts. At the moment there is only one channel listed and it can be accessed via the movies and TV option in Plex. The default section includes all of the video selections available via Plex with Crackle listed in separate rows.

Plex Slammed By Huge Copyright Coalition For Not Policing Pirates

Plex has become the latest neutral technology to get slammed for not doing enough to prevent movie and TV show piracy. According to pro-copyright lobby group CreativeFuture, which represents more than 560 companies and organizations, Plex – like Kodi – is a “dangerous digital media player” that has joined the ranks of “internet heavyweights who refuse to take responsibility for the criminal behavior on their platforms.”

In days gone by, living rooms around the world could be found stacked with video cassette tapes full of films and TV shows. Some bought, others recorded at home, these copies would need to be waded through, to find whatever content the owner fancied watching that day.
