Use a Raspberry Pi to Make a Police Scanner Radio

It might surprise you to learn that it is completely legal to listen to official police scanner radio transmissions in the United States. There is even a hobbyist community dedicated to exactly that, which is full of people who find it interesting to hear what the police are up to as they go about responding to crimes and other dispatches. Some states do have a couple of limitations, such as listening while driving or while committing a crime. But as long as you’re just listening at home, it’s legal in every state. If you want to do that yourself, YouTuber Kevin Darrah has a guide on how to use a Raspberry Pi to build an inexpensive police scanner.

Raspberry Pi 4 Gets an Update

The Raspberry Pi 4 is arguably the best piece of hardware ever released by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Looking at the specs and different Ram options it is easy to see why the Raspberry Pi 4 is head and shoulders above the other Raspberry Pi boards. The Raspberry Pi 4 was not without issues however but in the normal fashion, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has been hard at work fixing those issues through software and firmware updates.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation this week released updated firmware for the Raspberry Pi 4 which has been in testing since July. This new firmware helps the Raspberry Pi 4 run cooler and adds a network boot option.

Newly-Released Raspberry Pi 4 USB 3.0 Firmware Drops Power Draw, Heat Output on All Models

The hot-running Raspberry Pi 4 now has a new firmware which tames its heat output a smidge by enabling power saving on the Via Labs VL805 USB 3.0 host controller chip — after developers fixed a flaw in an earlier build of the firmware which could cause selected USB 3.0 devices to perform incredibly slowly.

The Raspberry Pi 4 single-board computer is an impressive beast, with up to 4GB of RAM hanging off a quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A72 CPU and shiny new Broadcom VideoCore VI GPU inside Broadcom’s custom-designed BCM2711B0 system-on-chip. Its power, however, comes at a price: As well as drawing more power than any of its predecessors, the board generates considerably more heat – enough, in fact, to hit the processor’s thermal throttle point and pull down its performance.

Halloween Pi + 3D print project: animated eyes horror mask

Halloween is upon us! My kids love to dress up and decorate the house, so a good maker project was needed. These animated eyes from Adafruit run from a Raspberry Pi and have placed behind a 3D printed and then painted mask. The final result is quite unsavory and will hopefully freak out a few kids and adults alike.

Raspberry Pi DOSBox: Play Classic DOS Games on the Pi

This project is a pretty easy process that will let you play the hundreds of great old DOS games that have been released as shareware, demos and of course freeware.

Now DOSBox will only let you play games designed for the MS-DOS operating system. If you want more than just this, then be sure to check out my tutorial on setting up Retropie for the Raspberry Pi.
