Commodore 64 Mini Man Makes Matching Mini Monitor

While putting together a retro computer is a great project and can teach a lot about the inner workings of electronics, hooking that 70s- or 80s-era machine up to a modern 144 Hz 1440p display tends to be a little bit anticlimactic. To really recreate the true 8-bit experience it’s important to get a CRT display of some sort, but those are in short supply now as most are in a landfill somewhere now. [Tony] decided to create a hybrid solution of sorts by 3D printing his own Commodore replica monitor for that true nostalgia feel.

Nvidia’s RTX 3080 looks like it might be getting a 20GB upgrade

Nvidia kicked off its RTX 30 series launch by announcing the RTX 3070, 3080, and 3090, but we always knew that the line-up would eventually expand beyond this in due time. However, little did we know that we might see an improved version of the flagship RTX 3080 at some point in the future.

Gigabyte was the first to reveal the potential GeForce RTX 3080 20GB, with double the memory of the newly released 10GB model. This has since been corroborated by Galax, as VideoCardz reports that the upgrade made an appearance on a roadmap during one of the manufacturer’s meetings in China. Since Gigabyte listed the 20GB version with an S in its product number, it’s possible that this could be the RTX 3080 Super or Ti instead of an iterative introduction, but only time will tell.

Multi-GPU technology is not quite dead but Nvidia is close to pulling the trigger

It feels like a million years since SLI was relevant, and even during its heyday, the prospect of running multiple graphics cards to boost performance in games had some serious downsides. Like cost, stuttering, and the fact that performance was not consistent across all games. None of it matters now, because SLI has been put on life support. Starting January 1, 2020, Nvidia will stop adding new SLI profiles to its GeForce driver packages.

Technically, SLI is not dead, but if this was an episode of The Walking Dead, it would be the one where it gets bit by a silicon-eating GPU. SLI is going to live on for a bit, supposing game developers decide to put the work in supporting the technology themselves without the benefit of specific SLI profiles at the driver level. But its days are numbered.

Microsoft acquires Bethesda Softworks

Microsoft has acquired ZeniMax Media and publisher Bethesda Softworks, the company announced Monday. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, published a letter on Xbox Wire, welcoming the The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, Doom, Dishonored, and Quake franchises, as well as Starfield and more, to Microsoft.

Spencer said the acquisition is a “landmark step” for Microsoft. Soon, Microsoft will add Bethesda’s games to Xbox Game Pass for console and PC, too.

“One of the things that has me most excited is seeing the roadmap with Bethesda’s future games, some announced and many unannounced, to Xbox console and PC including Starfield, the highly anticipated, new space epic currently in development by Bethesda Game Studios,” Spencer wrote.
