Tetris for GameBoy Gets Online Multiplayer

Released in 1989, the Game Boy version of Tetris is notable for being the first game to support multiplayer via the so-called “Game Link Cable” accessory. So it’s fitting that, 32 years later, that same game is now playable with others over the Internet thanks to an open source USB adapter from [stacksmashing].

As explained in the video below, the adapter is essentially just a Raspberry Pi Pico paired with some level shifters so that it can talk to the Game Boy’s link port. That said, the custom PCB does implement some very clever edge connectors that let you plug it right into the Link Cable for the original “brick” Game Boy as well as the later Color and Advance variants. This keeps you from having to cut up a Link Cable just to get a male end, which is what [stacksmashing] had to do during the prototyping phase.

A Golden Wii Made For Queen Elizabeth II Is Now For Sale

Back in 2009, as part of a publicity stunt for… Big Family Games, publisher THQ commissioned the creation of a golden Nintendo Wii, and had it delivered to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen likely never received the console—as outlined in this excellent episode of People Make Games—but it did eventually find its way into the hands of collector Donny Fillerup, one of the guys behind the website consolevariations.com, which I wrote about back in 2019.

Someone Made Part of Wario Land 4 With Unity and It’s Amazing

It has been well over two decades since Wario Land 4 released for the Game Boy Advance, yet fans still rave about how good the game is and how great it would be to get another installment. People are so adamant that a modern title in the series gets made that they’ve actually taken it upon themselves to create the building blocks for it.

Indie game developer MikMik is one of those people, posting a quick video to his Twitter account that revealed the Wario Land 4 project he’s been workshopping, and boy does it look awesome.

Metroid Prime’s 2D fan remake is now playable

Retro Studios’ GameCube classic,Metroid Prime, is getting a fan-made 2D remake called Prime 2D. The effort, which has been going since 2004 and called Prime 2D, is being led by a group called Team SCU. While screenshots of the game went up as part of an April Fools’ Day joke, the demo is in fact real, according a forum post by the creators.

The remake is the result of many years of love. In 2017, the team behind Metroid Prime 2D shared, “While public progress has appeared stagnant for the last 5 years, there has actually been a tremendous amount of foundational work being done in private.” Now, those following finally get to see just what the team has been up to.

But no, the modding maniac known as GmanModz is back at it again with the world’s smallest portable N64. He previously built the Nintendo 64 handheld that looked like a Gameboy Advance SP.
Somehow he has managed to modify a N64 console to fit in a tiny shell with the ability to play your best N64 games on the cartridges you still have hiding in your garage.
